Communication is Key

We believe communication fosters connection and connection supports student success. The incredible community we have built at Aurum Preparatory Academy (Aurum Prep) is due, in no small part, to our commitment to clear and consistent communication between families, students and school staff. Communication brings us together and creates trusted bonds.

The best way we know to teach our scholars the 21st century skill of communication is to model the types of positive and helpful communication that we seek. Here are a few of the ways we keep in contact with you, our families, and keep the channels of communication open with our sixth to eighth grade students.

Advisory

Our Advisory model provides the foundation for all communication between families and school. Upon enrollment, your child will be placed with an advisor and a small group of peers. This advisor will stay with your student throughout middle school, becoming a trusted and consistent point person for all communication. Your child’s advisor consistently checks in on grades and social-emotional learning and is also the first point of contact with parents.

Three times per year, we invite families to conferences to meet with teachers and discuss progress. Once per year, student-led conferences provide an opportunity to communicate academic and personal growth to parents from the perspective of the learner. Alongside the guidance of their advisor, Aurum Prep students prepare and present a PowerPoint presentation reflecting on the work they have done toward their goals. This yearly conference provides our students practice in speaking clearly and effectively.

Advisors are the first point of contact for families, providing a personal contact at Aurum Prep. We are also in frequent communication with families regarding student behavior and achievement. We will communicate with families when students fail to meet expectations just as when they exceed expectations.

Community Circle

Another example of how we model communication is our Community Circle. Once a week, all members of our school come together to discuss current events and take the pulse of the school. We value this time together as a way for student and faculty voices to be heard.

Community Circle is also a chance for us to celebrate student success and growth. We believe in recognizing and incentivizing students who strive for academic excellence and demonstrate our GOLD values: Growth, Optimism, Courage, Leadership and Design Thinking.

Communication is a Two-Way Street

We believe in keeping our doors, minds, and ears open for the Aurum Prep Community.

Students are encouraged to speak with their advisors and school staff–no question is too small. Families are also invited to contact us via phone or email with questions or concerns. To limit classroom distractions, we aim to return phone calls within 24 hours.

We also like to prevent unwanted surprises. We send frequent text and letters and stay in constant communication with families so you are always aware of how your student is doing.

Our website provides current updated information for families, related to schedules and events. Additionally, all of our school policies can be located here and in our student handbook.

Throughout the school year, we hold community events, like holiday celebrations and our Week Without Walls presentations, as a way to communicate the incredible work our students do and to celebrate our accomplishments. We couldn’t be a community without the contributions of our families.

Your trust in us is everything. We know a strong community starts with even stronger communication, which is why keeping you informed is one of our top priorities. We’re excited to welcome you to our tuition-free, structured and joyful middle school. Join us for the 2022-23 school year by enrolling your scholar today.
