5 Ways to Avoid a Summer Slide

At tuition free public charter middle school Aurum Preparatory Academy we encourage our students to enjoy the summer months, but that doesn’t mean shutting off their brains. Assistant Principal, Jessica Majerus says, “All year, we work to grow our brains and get smarter. Over the summer it’s important to relax and have fun, but also make sure that we’re continuing to grow our brains.

Here are five ways you can have fun and learn at the same time.

Go Outside and Explore

Aurum Prep students gather outside in a circle where they take advantage of warm weather to learn outdoors.

Summer is like the Week without Walls, except it lasts for a few weeks. Go outside and take a close look at your environment. Put your design thinking skills into practice and apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to your neighborhood.

Take a Field Trip

Expand your world by taking a field trip. At Aurum Prep field trips are an important learning experience during the school year, but during the summer take one with your family and friends. Visit a museum, a park, or even a college campus. It’s an opportunity to get inspired when you see something new.

Learn a New Skill

What skill have you wanted to learn, but didn’t have time for during the school year? Cooking? Pottery? Sewing? Now’s the time to explore a craft, a hobby, or a talent. Tell us about it when you come back to class.

Read

Students can lose up to three months of reading skills during the summer, but there’s a simple solution that works anytime, anywhere. READ. Experts agree that just 20 minutes of reading daily will help improve literacy skills for Aurum Prep students. Make a commitment to read every day.

Have Fun

Run, jump, swim, play. Get together with friends and enjoy the slower pace of summer. Mandatory orientation for new students is August 7-10. Returning students have orientation on August 11th. Parents and students will meet on campus August 23rd for a new school year orientation a couple weeks after school begins August 7th. Stay tuned for more important dates here in the next couple weeks. We’re looking forward to seeing you here soon.

Summer Learning Resources:

Students were given packets of math work that focused on building confidence and skills as mathematical problem solvers. These summer packets are not required, but they are encouraged, and students can earn extra credit in their classes in the fall by completing them. Pick one up today.
